In the mid eighteen hundreds the baseball bat was new and went through a lot of different experimentation with the shape and the size. The first baseball bats were flat like a cricket bat. In the next five years they founded that bats were best when rounded. most of the bats were made by local wood shops. With all the changes going one their had to be a rule. The rule was that the diameter of the bat couldn't be any wider than 2 1/2 diameters, though the length didn't matter. After ten years the length of the bat couldn't be longer than 42 inches. In 1884 the Louisville slugger was born. Their were many changes in the early nineteen hundreds with added a half inch on the diameter and better construction. Not until 1997 the maple bat made its way to the MLB. Players still use ash and oak bats but many are switching to maple bats.
